components

https://commons3.org/vocab/components

Controlled vocabulary for garment component types used in Berry Amendment provenance records. Components are inputs added at assembly — distinct from the fiber transformation stages tracked in materialStage.

Naming rule: Always describe components by material and type — never by brand name. A zipper is a nylon coil zipper or a brass open-end zipper, not a brand. A button is a natural corozo button or a cast brass button, not a manufacturer's name. Brand names are irrelevant to provenance and origin — material and origin are what matter.

Relationship to materialStage

materialStage tracks the transformation of a single fibre lot through processing stages. components tracks what was added at the assembly stage. Both appear as additionalProperty entries on a provenance Product record. A finished garment record typically has both.

Berry Amendment coverage

Berry Amendment (10 U.S.C. § 2533a) requires US origin for natural fibre components. if cotton/wool components must be traced to a US-origin fibre lot. not covered components (zippers, most buttons, elastic) have no origin requirement under Berry Amendment but may be subject to other DoD acquisition rules (Buy American Act, specialty metals restrictions).
